EXPANDING THE UNIVERSE

Between the nine mainline novels, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck wrote nine novellas that fill crucial gaps in the story. These aren't optional extras — they contain character origins, key plot bridges, and moments that recontextualize the entire series. In 2022, all nine were compiled into Memory's Legion, which also includes a brand new story.

The most ambitious Expanse expansion outside the novels. Dragon Tooth is a 12-issue comic series that bridges the 30-year gap between the TV show's finale (Babylon's Ashes) and the unadapted Book 7 (Persepolis Rising). It fills in what happened to the Rocinante crew, the Transport Union, and the rising threat of Laconia during those missing decades.

The Kickstarter campaign raised $1.4 million — smashing BOOM! Studios' record. The series was overseen by Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, making it essentially canon. Collected in three trade paperback volumes.

A newer comic series co-written by Wes Chatham — the actor who played Amos Burton on the show. This extends Amos's story beyond what we saw on screen, written by someone who understands the character intimately.

Four digital comics released alongside the TV show's early seasons, each exploring the origin story of a core Rocinante crew member: Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos. Short but illuminating character studies.

It's fitting that The Expanse started as a tabletop RPG setting (originally called "2350") and has come full circle with an official, author-approved tabletop game. Published by Green Ronin, the game uses the Adventure Game Engine (AGE) rules and lets players create their own crews — Earthers, Martians, or Belters — navigating the same political powder keg as the novels.

The Kickstarter hit $194,000 (goal was $30,000) in under 24 hours. The game is considered canon by Abraham and Franck, and even includes an exclusive short story, "The Last Flight of the Cassandra."

The product line has grown to include four hardbound rulebooks, a GM kit, custom dice sets, a ships sourcebook with detailed deckplans, and a series of "Trades of The Expanse" PDFs covering professions from bounty hunters to journalists. A Transport Union Edition was Kickstarted in 2024 to update the game with content through the full series.

A political strategy board game designed by Geoff Engelstein in collaboration with the series authors. Players represent four factions — Earth's UN, Mars's MCRN, the OPA, and Protogen Inc. — competing for dominance of the solar system through fleets, influence, and event cards featuring characters and moments from the series.

The game draws inspiration from Twilight Struggle but plays in about 60 minutes. Each card represents a character or event from the books, creating a tense game of political maneuvering that captures the series' themes of power, conspiracy, and fragile alliances.

The most anticipated Expanse media in years. Osiris Reborn is a third-person action RPG developed by Owlcat Games (the studio behind Pathfinder and Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader). Announced at the Future Games Show in June 2025, it immediately drew comparisons to Mass Effect — and the developers embrace the comparison.

You play as a Pinkwater Security mercenary on shore leave at Eros Station when everything goes sideways. Create your own captain — Earther, Martian, or Belter — and take command of the solar system's most advanced ship. The game spans from the events of Leviathan Wakes through Caliban's War, meaning protomolecule horrors, Eros, and the Ganymede Incident are all on the table.

Nominated for Best Game Trailer and Most Wanted Game at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025. No exact release date yet, but 2026 is confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic, GOG).

A narrative-driven adventure game from the revived Telltale Games, set before the events of the TV show. Players control Camina Drummer — the Belter leader who became a fan favorite — in her earlier years, making choices that shape her path and the people around her.

The game captures the intimate, character-driven storytelling that made the show special, with branching dialogue and moral dilemmas that feel authentically Expanse. It proved there was a massive appetite for Expanse games, directly paving the way for Osiris Reborn.

The Expanse isn't just a good sci-fi series — it fundamentally changed what audiences expect from space opera. Before The Expanse, "realistic" sci-fi on TV meant sterile corridors and technobabble. After it, audiences demand physics that work, politics that matter, and characters who feel like real people navigating impossible systems.

The show's rescue from cancellation by Amazon — driven by a massive fan campaign that included a plane towing a #SaveTheExpanse banner and bezos personally tweeting the announcement — became one of the most famous examples of fan activism saving a show. It proved that passionate niche audiences could move mountains.

The series' themes have become eerily prescient: income inequality between inner planets and Belt mirrors real-world wealth gaps; pandemic lockdowns echoed the Eros quarantine; the protomolecule's weaponization parallels debates about dangerous technologies; and Marco's radicalization arc reads like a case study in extremism. Critics have called it "the most politically relevant sci-fi of the decade."

The authors, Abraham and Franck, continue to shape sci-fi — their new book series has already been optioned for adaptation by the same team. The show's influence echoes through every new space series that tries to get the physics right, the politics messy, and the characters human.
